Region Earns Mixed Marks on Economic Scorecard

Illinois officials were happy with their grades on an economic-development report card released Wednesday. Their counterparts in Missouri, which got lower marks, questioned the report's value.

The report card, issued by the Corporation for Enterprise Development in Washington, D.C., emphasizes such things as infrastructure and education.

The non-profit corporation is funded by businesses, labor unions and private foundations.

It gave Missouri a D in economic performance and C's for business vitality and development capacity.

Last year, the group gave Missouri an F for economic performance and a B for business vitality.

Illinois got a D for overall economic performance, but a B for business vitality and an A for development capacity. Last year Illinois got an A for business vitality.

"I really can't say we are surprised about the grades," said Jim Gardner, spokesman for the Missouri Department of Economic Development. "We put very little credence in this report. …
