Cahokia Mounds Sets Events

Article excerpt

Archaeological field schools, Navajo crafts, evening dance performances and an observance of the summer solstice will be featured during June at Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site near Collinsville.

Early risers may enjoy the summer solstice sunrise at the mounds on June 25. The observance will be at the reconstructed Woodhenge sun circle, off Collinsville Road about half a mile west of the large Monks Mound.

The rising sun will align with a wooden post placed to coincide with the way ancient Indians placed the post to determine the seasons. The annual observance is held on the Sunday closest to the solstice so that a larger number of people may attend than on the actual solstice date during the week.

People should arrive by 5:20 a.m. on June 25 to hear an explanation of the discovery, form and function of Woodhenge.

An archaeological field school sponsored by the mounds in cooperation with the University of New Mexico and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville will be held throughout June. The field school will include mapping, coring and testing at Mound 48, a large platform mound just southwest of Monks Mound.

Information gathered during the field school should help indicate what activities took place at the mound hundreds of years ago, and soil cores from inside the mound could help investigators determine when the mound was built. Visitors are welcome to observe the field school.

An event called "Southwest Traditions" will be held at Cahokia Mounds from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 10. A children's Indian dance performance is scheduled for 2 p.m. that day. The event also will include demonstrations of Navajo silver work, beading, weaving and cooking. The free event will be held in and near the Interpretive Center.

A two-week workshop for elementary and secondary school teachers will be held at the mounds from June 12 through 23. …
