Tom Jones took the measure of the tiny temporary stage erected over the Coconut Grove dance floor. "I don't want to be falling in anyone's lap," he said, only party in jest.

The Welsh soul man probably still had his day job the last time he worked a room this small. But owner Sam Conti stopped at nothing to land the right act for the gala grand opening of his glamorous $1.5 million supper club. And even at $500 a ticket in the 100-seat room, Tom Jones undoubtedly represented something of a major loss leader for Conti.

But Conti couldn't have done much better than the brawny belter to christen his luxurious nightclub. Using his patented blend of soul standards, his own old hits and a sprinkling of the hip and current, Jones whipped the room into zabaglione by the end of his 90-minute set. Even Mayor Frank Jordan - doesn't he ever go home? - was rocking mildly, slapping his hands together and grinning broadly. …
