Burnout to Balance: One Journey

Article excerpt

HAVE YOU noticed how often working interferes with living?

Even if you do work that you love - and I do - sometimes the world and all that it has to teach distracts you. Sometimes, I'll sit at work and wish I were at the theater or out in a boat or in a greenhouse learning about the different species of orchids.

Ruth Luban is in favor of such brief breaks. She cautions against putting all your eggs in your work basket, so to speak.

Since 1988, Luban has specialized in treating people with professional burnout. She says it's usually the most committed and dedicated people who burn out, and a lack of balance in your life can be a big part of the problem.

"People with a strong sense of contribution in the workplace, people with unlimited intellectual potential, sometimes over-identify with work so strongly that they neglect to keep balance in their lives," Luban said last week from her home in Laguna Beach, Calif.

Burnout, Luban says, is the gradual erosion of energy and spirit as a result of long-term stress. It's not the same as depression or work addiction or mid-life crisis, she says, and burnout calls for different methods of healing.

In Laguna Beach, her healing methods include workshops, support groups and meetings with individual clients. Here, she will talk about her audiotape "Keeping the Fire: From Burnout to Balance " when she visits The Library Ltd. at noon on June 10. The bookstore is at 7700 Forsyth Boulevard.

If you can't make it to the store, you can request more information about the two-tape set by sending a stamped, self-addressed envelope to Luban at 412 North Pacific Coast Highway, Suite 197, Laguna Beach, Calif. 92651. To order the tapes, send a check or money order for $23.95 to the above address or call (714) 497-9777 for charge orders.

Luban grew up in Kansas City. Her sister, Evy Warshawski, is the managing director here at Edison Theatre. …
