Man Facing Charges in Bilking Customer Elderly Homeowner Tricked out of More Than $15,000

A man from Hannibal has been accused of bilking an elderly man in Warren County out of more than $15,000.

Charged with felony stealing was Henry Dodd, 58. Another Hannibal man, also in his 50s, was arrested and released, pending the outcome of an investigation by the Warren County Sheriff's Department.

Major Ray Runyon said that Dodd apparently was part of a group that contracted last year with the elderly man for 150 feet of asphalt paving at his house outside Warrenton.

After the work was done, a member of the group apparently persuaded the man to keep making payments. Over the period, the elderly man paid $15,000 for the job, about 10 times what it was worth, Runyon said.

Runyon gave this account:

Last week, the elderly man got a call from a man pretending to be an attorney for the company that had furnished the sealer for the paving job. The "attorney" said the paving company had gone bankrupt and still owed $7,000 for the sealer. The caller wanted payment. …
