Dear Dr. Fox: You have recommended that a parakeet should be allowed to fly and exercise to have a happier life. Well, I try to do this with Petey, but often he refuses to come out of his cage and he may even bite my hand.

Also, once he's out, what he does is certainly not flying. He flops about and bumps into the walls, then gets aggressive when I try to pick him up. I give up!

No, no, you must not give up. Birds need exercise to prevent becoming bored and obese, either one of which can lead to illness.

It isn't unusual for birds to protest both being taken from the cage and put back. You have to persist in your efforts, but do it at odd times to break any negative associations. And do give Petey a treat when you put him back in his cage.

You might also try putting some perches up near the walls so that Petey can rest if he gets nervous flying about. …
