Legion Squads Set to Celebrate 4th with Holiday Tournaments

Article excerpt

The Fourth of July weekend is a time for barbeques, picnics and fireworks.

And American Legion baseball tournaments. Each of the area's seven teams will be taking part in tournaments over the next week or so.

"It's nice to play without the pressure of league games," Wentzville manager Joel Adam said. "You get a chance to play some different teams and to hopefully use a few more of your players. You play to win, of course, but the games aren't quite as intense as they are during the regular season."

Following is a rundown of the tournaments involving area teams:

Fourth of July Firecracker Invitational - This 20-team event, to be played at Ballwin Park, will include St. Charles, Daniel Boone and O'Fallon.

"It should be a very good tournament," O'Fallon manager Ron Fuller said. "The local teams are very good and you have to figure the out-of-town teams are going to be pretty tough, too. Let's face it, a team's not going to come all the way to St. Louis if it doesn't have a pretty decent ballclub."

O'Fallon, which carried a 7-8 record into Wednesday and Thursday games against Daniel Boone, will play tournament host Ballwin tonight at 9, Collierville, Tenn., Saturday at 3 p.m. and Mountain Home, Ark., Sunday at 3 p.m.

St. Charles, which has won 11 consecutive games after a 1-4 start, plays Creve Coeur tonight at 9, Brookfield, Mo., Saturday at 3 p.m. and Springfield, Ohio Sunday at 9 a.m.

Daniel Boone plays Manchester tonight at 6, Bartlett, Tenn., Saturday at noon and Decatur, Ill., Sunday at 3 p.m.

Other teams in the tournament include Chesterfield, Crestwood, Kirkwood, Ash Grove, Mo., Morton, Ill., Sapula, Okla., and Evansville, Ind.

The top eight teams through pool play will advance to Monday's games at 6 and 9 p.m. On Tuesday, the semifinals are set for 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., with the title game slated for 5 p.m.

Elsberry Fourth of July Tournament - A six-team event, the tournament at Elsberry will include District Nine teams Elsberry, Cottleville-Harvester and Warrenton.

Elsberry (9-8) is in a pool with Mexico and Hardin, Ill., while C-H (9-5) will be competing with Moberly and Warrenton. …
