Reports: Nicks Ready To Name Nelson Coach

Don Nelson, who left as coach and general manager of the Golden State Warriors this year, will be the next coach of the New York Knicks, two newspapers reported Sunday.

The New York Times and Sunday Boston Globe said that a deal has virtually been completed, and an announcement would be made this week, possibly Thursday. A Knicks spokesman said Sunday that no announcement was imminent.

If a multiple-year contract is agreed upon, Nelson will receive $2 million a year, the Times said. The new coach will succeed Pat Riley, who resigned after last season.

***** FOOTBALL Bowden Close To $1 Million Contract

Coach Bobby Bowden and Florida State University are close to working out a $1 million deal, which would include a $50,000 bonus for winning a national championship, the Tallahassee (Fla.) Democrat reported. et Bowden's contract expires Jan. 31, 1997. But Bowden, 65, would like to remain through the turn of the century, the newspaper reported.

***** HOCKEY Milbury Pursuing Islanders Job

Mike Milbury says he's trying to reach an agreement to coach the New York Islanders but has not been hired, according to published reports.

"I guess it's safe to say that we are trying to work out a deal," the Boston Sunday Globe quoted Milbury as saying. "But has it been worked out? Not yet."

The newspaper said Milbury fell short of confirming a report in Sunday's editions of Newsday that said he had been hired.
