18 Receive Fulbright Grants for Academic Pursuits Abroad

Eighteen St. Louis area residents have been awarded Fulbright grants to study or teach abroad in the coming year.

Fourteen are from Washington University: three teachers, six recently graduated seniors, four graduate students and a 1992 alumna.

Carl M. Bender, professor of physics, and Peter Heath, chairman of the Department of Asian and Near Eastern Languages and Literature, are teaching abroad this summer. Bender is lecturing and doing research on mathematical physics at the Imperial College in London. Heath is lecturing in Malaysia on Islamic studies and Arabic language programs in the United States.

Robert K. Henke, assistant professor of drama and comparative literature, will spend the 1995-96 academic year in Florence, Italy, teaching and doing research in the connections between Italian and English early modern theater.

The May-graduate awardees are:

- Benjamin J. Gum, who will do research in Budapest, Hungary, on mathematical number theory.

- Sheba J. Holsey, who will study Mandarin Chinese at National Taiwan University in Taipei as part of a business internship there.

- Katherine S. Kraig, who will teach English to high school students in France.

- Lucinda D. Lessley, who will teach English to high school students in Germany.

- Elizabeth Martin, who will study the politics of cultural (museum) property at Waseda University and the National Library in Japan.

- Andrew Stone, who will study the connections between German and Russian history at the University of Munster in Germany and at the Haxthausen Archives there.

The graduate students, all doctoral candidates, are:

- Thomas A. Bonasera, who will do research at the University of Uppsala in Sweden on applying radiochemical properties of Carbon-11 to treating prostate cancer.
