Ross Tries to Flag Down a Rams Spot

Article excerpt

The man who scored the Rams' last touchdown in Southern California has scored their first in St. Louis.

Well, sort of.

The record books will forever show that wide receiver Jermaine Ross accounted for the Los Angeles Rams' last touchdown. He caught a 36-yard touchdown pass from Chris Miller last Christmas Eve in Anaheim. The Rams would score no more in California - they lost their 1994 finale 24-21 in Washington.

As for that first TD in St. Louis? OK, that 12-yard pass from Mark Rypien to Ross came in a scrimmage Saturday at Kirkwood High.

And not just any degree. Ross has a degree in electrical engineering from Purdue. He already has spent two summers as an intern with Ameritech in Indianapolis and was offered a permanent job. "I still know people there; I could always get back there," Ross said.

But if he keeps up his current pace at training camp, he may have to delay delving into fiber optics.

"Jermaine has had an outstanding camp," coach Rich Brooks said. "He has emerged from the minicamps, where he was just one of the guys in my opinion, to a guy who is making a move for playing time on this roster. …
