Road Trip Eyeing Series, Ohio Delays Highway Work

The Ohio Department of Transportation on Friday postponed a $30 million rehabilitation project on Interstate 71 in part because there's a chance that the Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Indians could meet in a World Series.

The possibility already is being called the "I-71 Series," named after the highway that links the two cities about 250 miles apart on opposite ends of the state.

The suburban Cincinnati project - one of four or five under way on the interstate - probably was going to start in September. It includes resurfacing, bridge repair, and new lighting and median dividers along 4.5 miles of road.

"We will defer it until the spring," said department spokesman Bruce Ward. "We've got a number of big events coming. The possibility of a World Series is one of them."

The work also could have interfered with traffic for Cincinnati's Oktoberfest celebration and Tall Stacks, a five-day Ohio River steamboat extravaganza scheduled for Oct. …
