Bolivians to Meet, Celebrate Heritage Consul Joins 30-Year Commemoration

BEATRIZ E. ARAUCO-CALVIN looks outside of her office window in Clayton and misses the snow-capped Andes of Bolivia, even after 35 years.

Arauco-Calvin is the honorary consul of Bolivia to St. Louis and is known here as "Betty." She and 150 other transplanted Bolivians can all reminisce and feel a little closer to their homeland as the Bolivian Society of St. Louis celebrates its 30th anniversary this weekend at the Holiday Inn in Clayton.

Bolivian Society members will watch slide shows tonight and reflect on the years since 10 area families formed the group in 1965. They will highlight family traditions and holiday celebrations, which include Andean flute music, colorful costumes inspired by Incan ancestors, and spicy corn and potato dishes. A formal dinner and dance will top off festivities Saturday night.

Gov. Mel Carnahan and Mayor Freeman R. Bosley Jr. have proclaimed Sunday as Bolivian Society of St. Louis Day, to celebrate Bolivia's independence from Spain in 1825. …
