Mabry Keeps Heat on Jorgensen to Get Playing Time

John Mabry, 24, was supposed to be a utility player this season and, in fact, was optioned to Louisville before the start of the season only to be recalled when Todd Zeile was placed on the disabled list.

But when he was brought back, Mabry was installed at first base, a new position for him. After Zeile was traded, he became more and more adept at it, but just when he reached a level of skill defensively besides hitting .280 - with little power - he was moved aside. Cardinals manager Mike Jorgensen and general manager Walt Jocketty wanted to see Mark Sweeney, acquired from California, play first base for a couple of weeks.

A day off Sunday for Ray Lankford got Mabry back into the lineup and back into right field, his best position. In addition to showing his defensive skills, notably a powerful arm, Mabry had a career-high four hits, including the game-winner in a 4-3 win over the Chicago Cubs in 13 innings.

Several days ago, Jorgensen had spoken to Mabry, explaining the club's position. Jorgensen said he was confident of Mabry's skills but Mabry said, "If I said it didn't matter, I'd be lying. I want to be in there every day.

"I'm going to try to make their decision tough not to play me. When I get in there, I'm going to try to do everything possible to stay in there. If I don't make their decision hard, I'm not doing my job."

Jorgensen seems to be enjoying a potential problem. "He's saying, `I don't like this sitting on the bench stuff,' " Jorgensen said. "Now we've got a day off to think about what we're going to do next. He's a motivated guy and he's not very happy when he's not in the lineup. He wants to be in there. He's making a bid."
