Earnhardt Drops Back In Winston Cup Chase

Dale Earnhardt, seeking his record eighth Winston Cup title, is farther from the points lead now than he has been in three years, NASCAR officials said Monday in releasing the latest standings.

Earnhardt finished 35th in Sunday's GM Goodwrench Dealers 400 at Michigan and finds himself 314 points behind series leader Jeff Gordon, who increased his total to 3,205 with a third-place showing.

Sterling Marlin is still within striking distance with 3,038 points. Mark Martin, who finished 38th at Michigan, is 285 points off the pace. Ten races remain in the Winston Cup season.

***** FOOTBALL N.C. State Players Charged

Five North Carolina State University football players are facing misdemeanor charges of breaking and entering and assault in an attack on a N.C. State basketball player and a woman, police said.

The players involved are Duan Everett, 21; Mike Harrison, 21; Ricky Bell, Lamont McCauley and James Walker, all 22.

A federal appeals court ruled in favor of the University of Tennessee in a suit filed by a former assistant football coach. The university fired Robert Maddox in 1992 after his arrest on drunken driving charges. Maddox sued, accusing the university of violating the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, claiming he was fired because of a handicap, his alcoholism.

***** MISCELLANEOUS Trainer Dies At 58

Sally Bailie, one of the first women to successfully train thoroughbred race horses in major U.S. stakes races, died Monday (Aug. 21, 1995) at the age of 58.

A native of England, Bailie became the first woman trainer to win both a $100,000 and a $200,000 race in the United States. Her best-known horse probably was Win, whose victories included the Bernard Baruch in 1984 and '85, the '84 Manhattan Handicap and the '85 Man o'War.
