Thinking the team might move from Los Angeles this year, but not knowing where, the Rams scheduled all four preseason games on the road this summer.

Friday's contest at Jack Murphy Stadium ended a nomadic month of August for the team, with 11,486 round-trip air miles logged between St. Louis and Seattle, Oakland, Jacksonville and San Diego.

Things will be different next season. The Rams' 1996 preseason schedule is all but set, according to one club official who requested anonymity.

For starters, the Rams will play home games in St. Louis against Jacksonville and San Diego.

The Rams-San Diego game is a summer tradition. Friday's game marked their 28th consecutive meeting, dating back to 1967.

OK, nothing to write home about?

Well, the hallowed Governor's Cup will be revived next season, with the Rams traveling to Arrowhead Stadium for some Marty-ball with the Kansas City Chiefs. The G-Cup, of course, will be a home-and-home affair, with the game in St. Louis every other season.

And lastly, the creme de la creme. Fasten your chin straps, St. Louis. Although it has yet to be finalized, the Rams plan to play a home-and-home exhibition series with the . . . Arizona Cardinals! That's right. Bill Bidwill's St. Louis expatriates vs. the Rams. Next year's game would be played at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Ariz. The 1997 tilt would be in St. Louis.

Kelly To Green Bay: Unsigned linebacker Joe Kelly quickly took take advantage of Thursday's decision by the Rams to waive their matching rights. Kelly has signed a one-year $420,000 deal with the Packers. The deal includes a $100,000 signing bonus, a $320,000 base, plus play-time incentives. Kelly was in Green Bay on Friday for the Packers' preseason finale against Washington - and was scheduled to play.

One of the Rams' latest offers was a $550,000 one-year deal, with a $200,000 signing bonus and a $350,000 base. But Kelly had become frustrated with the Rams during the long and at times convoluted negotiating process. He didn't want to be a backup, which seemed likely in St. Louis after the Rams signed outside linebacker Roman Phifer and Carlos Jenkins to big contracts in the offseason. …
