Chiefs Ride Turnover Past Vikes 17-13

Linebacker Tracy Rogers returned a fumble for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage Saturday and the Kansas City Chiefs went on to defeat the host Minnesota Vikings 17-13.

The Chiefs (3-1) also got a 1-yard touchdown run from J.J. Smith to hand Minnesota (2-2) its first home exhibition loss in eight games since Dennis Green became head coach in 1992.

Inconsistent in limited action through the first three exhibitions, the Vikings' first-team offense was pathetic in its final tuneup before the Sept. 3 opener at Chicago.

Rogers' 14-yard TD return on the first play gave Kansas City a 7-0 lead. On the Vikings' next possession, Minnesota quarterback Warren Moon appeared to turn the wrong way on a handoff, causing another fumble that Minnesota recovered.

Moon tripped over his own feet and was sacked to kill another possession, and the Vikings managed just five first downs in the first half and ran just eight plays in Chiefs territory.

Minnesota's best chance to score in the opening half came after David Palmer returned a punt 44 yards to the Kansas City 25 with 1 minute 29 seconds left in the half. But Moon threw into double coverage in the end zone and was intercepted by Jay Taylor.

Panthers 6, Giants 3: Things looked familiar for Carolina and New York. The Panthers won again without a great rushing game, and New York quarterback Dave Brown was injured again.

The expansion Panthers used two second-half field goals by John Kasay to rally for a victory, giving them a 3-2 record in an exhibition season in which their offense didn't produce a single rushing touchdown.

With the remnants of Tropical Storm Jerry enveloping the region and dumping heavy rain on Memorial Stadium in Clemson, S.C., the contest turned into a barrage of dropped balls and other miscues.

Struggling for a first down in the second quarter, Brown took a hard shot that looked capable of causing serious damage, but the diagnosis was limited to a concussion. …
