After Bettis Stalls, Russell Gets in Gear

Most teams have quarterback controversies. The Rams may have one at running back.

You be the judge:

Exhibit A: Jerome Bettis, he of the two 1,000-yard seasons and two Pro Bowl apperances, carried seven times Sunday for 4 yards.

Exhibit B: Leonard Russell, who has a 1,000-yard season to his credit, lugged it 10 times for 36 yards, including some key carries in the second half of the 17-14 victory over Green Bay.

So who should be the guy? And does this qualify for controversy status? Not even cornerback Todd Lyght, usually the Rams' straighest of shooters with the media, wanted to tackle this subject head-on.

"I just think we're going to put whoever in that's going to help us win at the time," Lyght said. "Jerome was struggling early. Leonard came in, and Leonard's a different type of runner. He's the type of runner that makes something happen because his running style is so unorthodox.

"He's diving, jumping over linemen, doing whatever it takes to get those yards. …
