Ex-Convict Accused in Woman's Strangling

They met in prison when she was visiting. When he got out, he wooed her. Then last week, officials said, he killed her.

Three days after the slaying, he married another woman. When police caught him, he was with a third.

On Friday, authorities charged Anthony Winfield, 31, with murder. He is accused of slaying Lillian McKendall, 37, at her home in Ferguson.

Capt. Ed Kemp of the Major Case Squad gave this account:

The suspect shared a prison cell in Jefferson City with the victim's brother. The suspect was doing time for burglary and got out in March.

McKendall lived alone at the Park Ridge apartments in Ferguson and worked as a parking lot attendant at Lambert Field.

On Tuesday, Aug. 28, Winfield dropped off one girlfriend at a bingo game in south St. Louis. Then he went to visit McKendall.

That night, he searched McKendall's apartment for money or drugs. She tried to stop him and he killed her in a fight, authorities said.

The victim weighed 340 pounds, the suspect 140 pounds. …
