A Hole-by-Hole Look at Forest Hills Ghp Heartland Classic Forest Hills

Article excerpt

1. PAR 4 338 YARDS

From elevated tee, this can be a troublesome short hole. Shots missed left mean difficult recovery, blocked by trees. Green is guarded on right by newly extended bunker.

2. PAR 4 388 YARDS

Long, straight and narrow. Architect Dick Nugent calls it "a good, solid golf hole." Accuracy is a must. Out of bounds is right, and shots missed left fall down the hill into trees.

3. PAR 3 180 YARDS

Newer, elevated tee makes this look intimidating. Players must carry front bunker to green of little depth from this angle. Large, grassy hollow gathers shots missed left. Bail-out area is short and front.

4. PAR 4 392 YARDS

Long par 4 made difficult with trees and out of bounds right and fairway bunker left. Green is receptive to straight-in approach. Trees right and bunker left require long, accurate second shot.

5. PAR 5 480 YARDS

Slight dogleg left. Ideal drive is left center. Second shot is slightly uphill. Players going for green in two must deal with large mounds right and bunker left.

6. PAR 4 349 YARDS

Tee shot makes or breaks this short dogleg left. Right center is place to be. Green-side bunker guards entrance, making second shot struck from too far right a precarious proposition.

7. PAR 3 153 YARDS

Reworked greenside bunkers require carry over sand. Players who overclub to take bunkers out of way must contend with green that falls away and may not hold shot.

8. PAR 5 507 YARDS

Approach to green can be exciting. Small lake is 30 yards in front of green. "Go-or-no-go" point for attacking green in two is 50 yards beyond fairway bunkers.

9. PAR 4 385 YARDS

Nugent calls this Forest Hills' toughest hole. It is all-carry on second shot to green that doesn't have much depth. This could make hole play about 20 yards longer. Fairway bunkers left and right.

10. PAR 4 365 YARDS

Probably the easiest hole on the course. …
