TAKE A trip to an orchard (or the market) and pick some apples for this cobbler.

This recipe was adapted from the "Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook," second edition. APPLE COBBLER For topping:

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

2 tablespoons granulated sugar

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 cup ( 1/2 stick) butter

1/4 cup milk

1 egg, slightly beaten For filling:

1 cup granulated sugar

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1/2 to 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

6 cups sliced, pared apples (Jonathan, Granny Smith or any firm-textured variety)

To prepare topping: Sift together flour, baking powder, sugar and salt into a bowl. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Combine milk and egg and add all at once to the crumb mixture, stirring just once to moisten. Set aside. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

To prepare filling: Combine sugar, flour, cinnamon and nutmeg; toss with apples. Cook over medium heat, stirring, until almost tender and a syrup has formed, about 7 minutes. Pour into a 9-inch square or round baking dish. Immediately, spoon on topping in 6 mounds. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes or until topping browns and filling bubbles.

Buttermilk baking mix is the easy basis for this topping. The recipe is from the "Farm Journal's Complete Pie Cookbook." APPLE COBBLER For filling:

1 cup granulated sugar

2 tablespoons cornstarch

1/8 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

2 tablespoons ( 1/4 stick) butter or margarine

5 cups thinly sliced peeled apples For topping:

1 1/2 cups buttermilk baking mix (such as Bisquick)

5 tablespoons granulated sugar, divided

1/2 cup milk

1 1/2 teaspoons grated orange peel

Whipped cream or ice cream, optional
