George E. Mowrer, a retired professor and dean of education, died Sunday (Sept. 17, 1995) at Christian Hospital Northeast in north St. Louis County after a long illness. He was 81.

Professor Mowrer, of North County, was a professor of education at the University of Missouri at St. Louis from 1966 until his retirement in 1984. From 1968 to September 1970, he was dean of UMSL's school of education.

Professor Mowrer was director of guidance services for the St. Louis Public Schools from 1952 to 1966. From 1949 until he joined the city's school system, he was director of guidance services for the Missouri Department of Education.

Before joining UMSL, Professor Mowrer taught at Western Michigan University.

During the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, he published books and reports on high school education and counseling.

Professor Mowrer received his bachelor's degree in education in 1940, his master's in education in 1946, and a doctorate in 1956, all from the University of Missouri at Columbia. …
