Ambush Turns the Page on Title Season

The Ambush officially kicked into "defending champions" mode on Monday with the opening of preseason training at Soccerhaus.

Player-coach Daryl Doran had about 30 players on hand for the first session.

The Ambush, which swept Harrisburg in the National Professional Soccer League championship series last spring, will open the 1995-96 season on Nov. 3 at Wichita. The home opener will be Nov. 11 against Chicago at Kiel Center.

Can the Ambush repeat this season?

"It's always harder to defend a championship," said forward Mark Moser. "But that's the fun part. Everybody will be gunning for you."

Captain Kevin Hundelt said now that the Ambush had been to the finals for the last two years, anything less than winning it would be unsatisfactory. "We've got a good attitude . . . and most of the guys are coming back. I see no reason why we shouldn't."

Said goalie Jamie Swanner, who played on five championship teams with the Canton Invaders in the 1980s: "It's feasible, but it won't be easy. …
