Rested Rams Say a Fond Goodbye to Bye Going against Falcons Thursday, Brooks Aims for Division Title

The Rams are back from a bye week and more confident than ever.

In training camp, coach Rich Brooks said his team could compete for a playoff berth even though it was coming off a 4-12 season and hadn't had a winning record in the 1990s. On Monday, he was shooting even higher.

The Rams are 4-1 and tied for the NFC West lead with Atlanta and San Francisco entering Thursday's game against the Falcons.

"It'd be foolish when we're tied for first place not to think about winning our division," Brooks said. "You think about not only playoffs but home field advantage and all of those things.

"When you assess where we are right now and where the rest of the league is right now, we're in as good a shape as anybody."

Brooks said that includes Dallas and San Francisco, even though those teams have a lot more experience.

"I don't know that I would expect he would play the whole game, but I think he'll play a significant role for us," Brooks said. "We need to get more pressure."

Hampered by the injury, Bettis was held to 31 yards on 11 carries in the Rams' 21-18 loss at Indianapolis Oct. 1.

"The days off definitely helped me," Bettis said. …
