Fiber-Optic Data System Sought for City Hall

To speed the transfer of information from one city office to another, St. Peters is working on an agreement with Teleport Communications Group to construct a fiber-optic-cable system connected at City Hall.

The Board of Aldermen has approved the development of a Sonet Ring Agreement with TCG, an area company, for the development of a telecommunications plan and network. City Administrator Robert Irvin is negotiating the details with TCG, and a final agreement should be available within the next week.

Wil Chase, who coordinates communications for St. Peters, says the current network is connected by copper wire. The fiber cable will allow sending more information from City Hall to the police department and other public buildings at a much faster pace, Chase says. Such things as the control of traffic signals also can be handled by a fiber-optic system.

The first connections will be between City Hall and the police department and the water plant.

TCG would develop and operate the system, Chase said. …
