Top-ranked Parkway South hit four home runs in a 17-0 state semifinal win over Willard on Friday night at the Fountain Lakes Softball Complex.

Willard freshman pitcher Renea Vest allowed a home run to Jen Regnery to open the game.

"She's a freshman and got in a tough situation when our bats came alive," Parkway South coach Fred McConnell said. "We have a couple kids who are swinging a hot bat at the right time."

The Patriots (22-4) scored four more runs in the second inning, five in the fourth and six in the fifth. Andrea Wirkus, Rachel McCombs and Erin Stremsterfer also had home runs for the Patriots.

Parkway South advances to play Hannibal in the Class 4A championship game at 2 p.m. today. Hannibal defeated eighth-ranked Francis Howell 5-1 in the other semifinal.

Parkway South pitcher Stremsterfer allowed just one hit, in the third inning. She pitched all five innings and struck out seven batters without a walk.

"Our first batter gets up there and hits a home run, and that just totally boosted our confidence," Stremsterfer said. …
