Trial for 2 Accused of Plot to Kill Prosecutor Man Faced Child-Sex Case; Sheriff Posed as `Hit Man'

Jerry Dean Schaeffer and Diane Klees Schaeffer, a husband and wife from St. Charles, face a trial for allegedly conspiring to kill Rebecca Shaffar, an assistant prosecutor in St. Charles County.

Police said the Schaeffers wanted Shaffar dead because she was prosecuting a case of child sexual abuse against Jerry Schaeffer, 31. Shaffar frequently wins such cases.

Associate Circuit Judge Jon A. Cunningham decided after a hearing on Tuesday that the state had enough evidence that the Schaeffers had committed the crime to send it to trial.

Lt. Wesley Simcox of the St. Charles County Sheriff's Department testified at the hearing that he had posed as "Tim," a hit man allegedly from Kansas City. Simcox said that he had ridden with the Schaeffers in their van on Aug. 11 while they got money from an ATM at a local bank so that he could buy a shotgun to kill Shaffar.

Simcox said that before settling on the shotgun, Jerry Schaeffer had considered killing Shaffar with a crossbow and also considered trying to make her death look like an accident. …
