Spirited debate is welcome during deliberations by members of the Board of Aldermen, but there are times when the least said, the better.

Take the two most recent examples of loose aldermanic lips. One set belongs to Kenneth Jones, the 22nd Ward Independent; the other to Marge Vining, the 15th Ward Democrat. At a Public Safety Committee hearing on Oct. 5, Mr. Jones became upset because the chair, Marit Clark of the 6th Ward, threatened to have him removed from the room for speaking before being recognized.

At which point Mr. Jones replied "I'd like to see the (bleep) who would throw me out." His 12-letter vulgarity was out of place, particularly in a public building where the people's business is conducted.

Alderman Sharon Tyus of the 20th Ward probably has made matters worse by introducing a resolution calling for fining Mr. Jones $300 unless he apologizes. Perhaps the public reaction will persuade him to show more respect for the institution he represents if not for himself. …
