Peace Is More Than a Pact, Arafat Says at Harvard `It Needs Your Help,' He Tells Audience

Lasting peace in the Middle East will take more than the signing of a compact in Washington, Yasser Arafat said Tuesday.

"Peace is not only something to sign at the White House," Arafat told a crowd at Harvard University. "Peace is more difficult, so it needs all our efforts together, and it needs your help so that we can all of us push together the peace process . . . in the most important strategic area in the whole world, the Middle East."

After greeting the crowd in Hebrew, Arabic and English, he promised to do what he could to hold free elections in the Gaza Strip in January but said it would be difficult to guarantee that they would run smoothly.

"We will do our best to have this democracy, pluralism, justice," said Arafat, the leader of the Palestinian Liberation Organization.

It was his first speech at an American university. Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin is scheduled to speak at Harvard on Nov. 15.
