Dear Dr. Fox: Our 10-month-old puppy has a red, raw patch on his right side that he bites day and night.

Sometimes a rash appears on his upper left leg, but it's never as pronounced as the patch on his side.

He has been to three veterinarians and has been flea-tested, allergy-tested and thyroid-tested. The last test showed a slight thyroid condition.

The vet felt the pup should be on thyroid medication, so he's been on it for the last four months. His blood count is better, but the patch isn't.

He tested allergic to cats, wool and smoke even though we have no cats, no wool carpets and I never smoke indoors. Now the vet is suggesting that our puppy get allergy shots every other day for one month and then continue the shots with less frequency.

Since our puppy has been through so much, I'd do anything to avoid subjecting him to these shots. …
