Hershiser Passed His Orel Exam

Orel Hershiser felt his manhood being questioned all week after he pulled himself from Game 1 of the World Series.

The Cleveland Indians' righthander was determined not to let that happen to him Thursday night, and he rebounded for a win in Game 5.

"It was important for me to go out there and show the intensity and leadership that I was brought here for," Hershiser said. "And not be somebody who walked off the mound . . . not for the good of the team.

"In Game 1, I had the good of the team totally in mind. I just checked out on ego. Maybe I managed myself too much that night. So, tonight, I checked out as a manager. If they asked me how I felt, they were going to have to make the decision."

Hershiser said he felt strangely relaxed before Thursday night's game. "I'd have to say it's the most peace I've felt before a big game in my life," he said.

Hershiser said he also drew upon his Christian background. "There were a lot of Christians around the United States and probably around the world who were praying for me," he said, "because I maybe had an impact on their lives at one time or another."

From a mechanical standpoint, Hershiser said, "I stood taller on the mound. Taller and prouder."


Former Cardinals manager Joe Torre has surfaced as the leading candidate to manage the New York Yankees.

Buck Showalter told the Yankees on Thursday he will not return as manager next season.

Torre interviewed for the Yankees' general manager job last week before it went to Bob Watson. Watson once played for Torre when he managed the Atlanta Braves.

Before leaving his new home in Cincinnati for a golf tournament in West Palm Beach, Fla., Torre said he didn't want to "talk about somebody else's job." That was before he had heard Showalter wasn't coming back.

On the other hand, Torre said, "I would listen to somebody if they wanted to talk to me. …
