Hogan to Get Top Billing on New Team with Penske

Now that Bobby Rahal has split with Carl Hogan and taken the Miller Brewing Co. sponsorship package with him, things will be vastly different next season for both.

Hogan's name no longer will get second billing on a major team, because he has joined forces with Roger Penske for 1996.

"It's going to be called Hogan-Penske LLC," Hogan said this week. "I'm the majority partner and Roger is the minority partner. It's going to be a separate team, but there will be associations. We will be running the new Penske chassis and the new Mercedes motors."

Penske's IndyCar program, sponsored by Marlboro, will continue to field two drivers in the Championship Auto Racing Teams series. Al Unser Jr. and Paul Tracy already are signed to drive the cars.

Emerson Fittipaldi remains under contract to Penske, and his status remains in doubt.

Penske now is involved with two of the biggest St. Louis names in motor sports - Rusty Wallace in NASCAR and Hogan in IndyCar racing. Plus, former St. Louisan Don Miller manages the NASCAR program for driver Wallace.

Hogan said his new team manager will be Tom Wurtz, who has been with the Newman-Haas team for the last nine years.gsos

Rahal said he wanted to do things on his own, without co-owner Hogan, who is the patriarch of the St. Louis trucking firm that bears his name.

The Rahal-Hogan team won the 1992 PPG championship in its first year together, and it was a giddy time. Together, they won the Miller Genuine Draft sponsorship and posted four wins, three pole positions and 20 finishes in the top three.

But they also had hard times: The ill-fated experiment with their own chassis and not making the field in the Indy 500 in 1993. The brief try with the experimental Honda engine in 1994, and a near-miss for the second consecutive year at Indianapolis.

But overall, Rahal-Hogan was among the top teams in IndyCar racing from 1992-95. …
