Eddie D. Holman IV, 18, a senior at Gateway Institute of Technology, is in the spotlight this week for literally reaching for the stars.

His career goal is to become an astronaut. His teachers say he has the talent and drive to do it.

An uncle's interest in the television show "Star Trek" sparked Eddie's interest in space and science fiction. That led him to an interest in the technology used in the space program.

Eddie says he is concerned about suggestions for cuts in the nation's space program. He believes that the future of the human race may be in space. "We are wasting resources on Earth," he said. "People need to find different solutions to prolong living here."

Eddie's first small step toward space was to win a $500 scholarship for flying lessons from the Scott Air Force Base Chapter of the Daedelian Society. Eddie began lessons in October at Parks Aerospace College.

At Gateway, Eddie takes a leadership role. He was chosen on the basis of academic and leadership talents by his teachers to be corps commander of the Missouri 851st Air Force Junior ROTC program. As commander, he oversees all cadet activities.

"It's a real learning experience," he said. "But it's an honor to be commanding over 200 cadets."

He also is a member of the Junior ROTC Drill Team and the track team. He works as a member of the school's Awareness Presentation Team, which discusses drug awareness, peer pressure and other issues with elementary- and middle-school students throughout the area.

Last summer, Eddie attended Missouri Boys' State and was an alternate to Boys' Nation in Washington.

He also attended the Missouri Highway Patrol Cadet Academy in Jefferson City. Eddie was selected by his fellow students as the class commander. …
