Freeburg High football coach Dave Bone took off his hat, ran his fingers through his thinning hair and shook his head.

The Du Quoin Indians had just manhandled his Midgets 21-7 in the Illinois Class 3A semifinals Saturday.

The win sends Du Quoin (13-0) into the finals Friday against Spring Valley Hall at Illinois State University in Normal. The Indians were last year's runners-up, losing to Bloomington Catholic 22-12.

Freeburg, making its first-ever trip to the semifinals, finished at 9-4. The Midgets also lost to Du Quoin in the first round in 1990 and 1993.

"They pretty much shut down any running game we could think of," Bone said. "They have an outstanding team. When it comes to the semifinals, it's who wants it more and they completely dominated us in the first half."

The Indians bottled up Joe Bruss, holding him to 47 yards on 13 carries. That includes Bruss' 14-yard TD run with 2 minutes 9 seconds left in the third quarter.

Du Quoin held Bruss, 6 feet 2 and 220 pounds, to 21 yards in the first half as Freeburg gained only 28 yards and trailed 21-0 at halftime. …
