Greenhouse Effect Another Grant Helps Teaching of Environmental Studies

Francis Howell High School teacher Gerry Boehm is as dedicated to obtaining grants to further environmental studies as he is in teaching the subject.

Boehm's most recent grant came from some occupants of the nearby Missouri Research Park. They gave about $13,500 to refurbish a greenhouse and to help Boehm train students and fellow teachers in various aspects of environmental studies, particularly checking the water quality of local creeks and streams.

Much of the money was used to remodel the old VocAg building and the adjoining greenhouse. A large closet has been converted into a lab with new cabinets, sinks and countertops. The greenhouse has been refurbished with a new plastic roof covering and a new ventilation system. Currently, students are growing poinsettias in the greenhouse. They will sell them before Christmas with the profit going back into their science projects.

Boehm is using the rest of the grant money to continue work on his educational partnership with 10 high schools in the county and 13 middle schools.

"The training consists of how to read maps, so they can map the watershed, how to do chemical and macro-invertebrate monitoring, the two qualities we check for how to identify (problems) because they are indicators" of quality of water, said Boehm. The use of chemical-analysis kits is also taught.

Teachers and students from the high schools have been trained, and the training is beginning for middle schools. Normally, the training consists of two half-day sessions. …
