Kennedy Remains with Boston; Mattingly to Retire?

Kevin Kennedy, who led Boston to the American League East title in his first season as its manager, has patched up his differences with the Red Sox and accepted a one-year contract extension through the 1997 season.

The announcement by general manager Dan Duquette came 11 days after Kennedy rejected an earlier offer that "shocked" him.

He said terms of Kennedy's contract for next year were not renegotiated, and he refused to disclose terms for the extra year. Kennedy's original contract had salaries of $300,000 for this year and $350,000 for next year.

After learning of the earlier offer, which reportedly contained a $50,000 raise for 1997, Kennedy had said, "Quite frankly, I'm hurt. . . . What they offered would be a normal raise for any manager. What's the reward for winning?"

It also was announced that first-base coach Frank White, third-base coach Dave Oliver, hitting coach Jim Rice and pitching coach Al Nipper, who lives in Chesterfield in the offseason, also will return. …
