Stephen J. Apted, who heads Apted-Hulling Inc., wants to trade his canoes, campground and rustic lodge for a new subdivision development for older people in St. Charles County.

Well, not literally. He plans to use money in the transaction. It's just that he wants to put his money and energy into selling houses to golfers instead of inn-keeping for hiking families.

Apted is selling Wilderness Lodge, Riversedge Campground and about 1,200 acres on the Black River near Lesterville at auction Friday.

On Apted's drawing board is "Fiddlesticks" - a 190 acre-condominium development across Foristell Road from his New Melle Lakes Golf Course. "I want to build a total community development for seniors," Apted said. "They could live there and have everything taken care of - landscaping, golf, tennis, swimming, social stuff."

He plans to build 300 duplex and triplex units, with a starting sale price of $125,000 to $150,000.

A 30-acre corner would be developed commercially, for retail and service businesses. …
