Spotlight Three Star

Article excerpt

Lisa Galluzzo, a senior at Lafayette High School, is in the spotlight because of her involvement in school activities.

Lisa is a member of the National Honor Society and of the math and science honor societies.

She is the student coordinator of a Project Interface team that is surveying rehabilitation patients to learn the effect of nutritional counseling on their recovery.

Lisa is president of the tae kwon do club - a sport she took up "for a chance to get exercise, learn a new skill and have fun with my friends." Having recently mastered a jump step side kick, which involves breaking a board with your foot, Lisa, a green belt, says, "It doesn't hurt if you do it right."

Lisa is a member of the school orchestra and of a select honor ensemble, the Premiere Chambers Strings. She began learning the violin at age 4 because she wanted to emulate her older cousins. Lisa also plays violin with the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra at Powell Hall and the All-State Orchestra, which will perform in January for the state music teachers association.

Having lived in Dallas her freshman and sophomore years, she went with the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra two years ago on a concert tour of Europe.

The experience evoked a "satisfying feeling that music is appreciated universally," she said.

While in Texas, Lisa studied salmonella, a bacteria that causes food poisoning, on cutting boards. She collaborated with a microbiologist from the University of Wisconsin, and the result was a manuscript soon to be published in the medical journal Dairy, Food and Environmental Sanitation. Lisa won second place in the Texas State Science Fair for her research.

Lisa recently received a YWCA Future Leader Award - the only high school student of 11 winners - for her academic, community service, leadership and extracurricular achievements. Lisa works as a candy striper at St. Luke's Hospital in Chesterfield. …
