Families May Now Band Together on Garage Sales

Manchester residents may now join with one or two other families in having garage sales.

In response to a resident who wanted to have a sale with another family, the Board of Aldermen recently amended an ordinance to allow sales in one location by up to three households.

"A woman who wanted to do this knew that others were doing it illegally, so she wanted to see about getting legal permission," said City Administrator Michael Leavitt.

Unchanged is the provision allowing up to three garage sales at one residence in a calendar year. No fee is charged for the permits for the first two sales; the third permit is $50.

Leavitt said anyone joining another household's garage sale without permission would be in violation of the amended ordinance, as would the resident who was holding the sale.

"The non-resident party wouldn't be on the permit, and the resident would be guilty of not listing the others on the permit they take out," he said. Violators are subject to court action. …
