Murdoch Starting Cable News Net To OutFox CNN

Media baron Rupert Murdoch named a prominent cable TV figure Tuesday to head his new all-news television network and vowed to spend $80 million a year to fulfill his dream of having his own CNN.

The chairman of News Corp., whose Fox TV network has become a major player in U.S. television, told a press conference that he wanted his news network up and running by the end of the year.

To get his network going, Murdoch named Roger Ailes, a former political consultant to three Republican presidents who recently resigned as president of NBC's CNBC cable network, as chairman and chief executive of the new venture, which will be called Fox All News Network. Reuters

***** SBC, Disney Test New Cable TV Service In Texas

SBC Communications Inc. is offering cable television service in Richardson, Texas, as part of a trial of americast, a video service developed jointly with Walt Disney Co. and other major telephone companies.

The service is the first cable service SBC has offered in the home territory of its biggest subsidiary, Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. The 18-month trial will be available to as many as 1,800 homes wired to a fiber optic network.

For $22.95 a month, customers will get a basic cable service with 60 channels, including the Disney channel. Premium cable services, the Sega game channel and CD-quality music channels are available for additional fees. Post-Dispatch

Nearly 100 farmers broke through a police cordon in Bangalore, India, Tuesday and ransacked a Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet, demanding that the multinational fast-food chain leave India.
