Ghirardelli Goes To Marshmallows

Ghirardelli Chocolate Co., the upscale sweet maker and a San Francisco tourist mainstay, has changed hands for the third time in 10 years.

Ghirardelli, founded in 1852, has been owned by the Boston venture capital firm of Thomas H. Lee Co. since 1992, when Lee acquired the company from Quaker Oats Co., which acquired it from the De Domenico family in 1986.

GM Has A Lot Riding On New Opel Minivan

General Motors Corp. touts its new Opel Sintra minivan in Europe this week, starting a new effort to carve a bigger piece of a U.S. market segment that has been dominated by Chrysler Corp.

The Sintra, built by GM in Doraville, Ga., is a preview of its U.S. cousins - the Chevrolet Venture, Pontiac Trans Sport and Oldsmobile Silhouette. They will show up late this year as replacements for GM's long-nosed, plastic-bodied APV compact vans, which were derisively dubbed "dustbusters" or "anteaters" when they were introduced for the 1990 model year.

The new vans tadd many of the carlike qualities that have kept Chrysler on top of the market more than a decade.
