This eponymous release is the bare bones, indie flavored rock equivalent of a simple, but tasty oil and vinegar dressing: It beats most of the fancy stuff.

"Burnin' Rubber" is an old-fashioned, muscle-car tune with a bitchin' surf groove and harmonious refrains. If only the band hadn't felt compelled to squeeze in the requisite dissonant grunge breaks and had just stuck with being The Beach Boys for a while.

"Jalopeno Eyes" is a comical love letter from a gringo to his Mexican sweety: "Born on Cinco De Mayo Day/She likes to do it that Chihuahua way." Mr. Mirainga has a bite that matches its bark. Hear it at 7055

In the annoyingly precious custom of the overrated Portishead, The Professor and Maryann get stranded on an isle of unfunky debris. Think of the wispy squawking of Ricky Lee Jones without the merciful accompaniment of ace jazzmen and you've got the irritating fare that Ken Rockwood and Danielle Brancaccio have inflicted on the music world. …
