Man Gets Four Months For Digging Up Grave

The first of three men to be sentenced for desecrating a grave near Edwardsville has drawn four months in a state-prison boot camp.

Robert Christopher Stover, 20, of Worden, admitted digging up the grave of an 89-year-old woman and using a headstone to try to break into the casket. He had pleaded guilty of criminal damage to property, as did Leonard D. Hill IV, 19, of Worden, and Michael W. Marco, 19, of Edwardsville. They will be sentenced later.

Associate Judge J. Lawrence Keshner said Tuesday that desecrating the grave at the St. James Cemetery in 1994 was vile. He said Stover would have to serve three years in prison if he cannot get accepted at a boot camp or if he does not complete the camp satisfactorily.

Assistant State's Attorney Richard Rybak asked for the maximum sentence of three years in prison. Stover's attorney, Special Assistant Public Defender Rand Hale, recommended three years' probation.

Councilman Reinstated On Committeeman Ballot

A circuit judge in Belleville decided Wednesday to reinstate East St. Louis City Council member Michael V. Collins on the ballot for precinct committeeman in the city's 26th Precinct.

Collins sued after he was removed from the March 19 election ballot last month by the St. Clair County electoral board, made up of St. Clair County State's Attorney Robert B. Haida, County Clerk Sam Flood and Circuit Clerk C. Barney Metz.

The board agreed with Hermon Betts, an opponent of Collins, who filed a complaint charging that Collins did not live at the address he claimed, 22 Loisel Drive in East St. Louis. Collins said he lived there with several family members, despite utility bills that seemed to indicate the home was vacant.

After listening to both sides, Associate Judge Robert L. Craig ruled Wednesday that Collins met the residency requirement.
