`George & Alana' Sent to Talk-Show Heaven

THE INK on the Nielsen ratings for February is barely dry and already those statistics are claiming some victims.

"The George & Alana Show," the talker hosted by former lovebirds George Hamilton and Alana Stewart, has just become the latest talk show to die from anemic ratings.

Citing the glut of talk shows, low ratings and expensive production costs, Rysher Entertainment, producer and distributor of the gabfest, announced production on the program will cease this month.

The "George & Alana" demise comes as syndicators conduct an intensive analysis of the Nielsen ratings for the recently completed February sweeps - a quarterly ratings period used by local stations to set future advertising rates. Those ratings carry lots of weight for stations and syndicators, as they decide whether a show lives or dies.

So, while "George & Alana" is the most recent such series to bite the dust, it's certainly not expected to be the last.

The freshman series "Mark Walberg" and "Tempestt" (Bledsoe) are just t wo of several underperforming shows whose fates are up in the air. …
