Article excerpt

The New Jersey Devils continued to gear up for the playoffs by extending their unbeaten streak to a franchise-record 10 games with 5-0 victory over the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday night.

Martin Brodeur stopped 32 shots for his sixth shutout of the season, and Dave Andreychuk had a goal and an assist in his first game with New Jersey as Jacques Lemaire became the Devils' winningest coach with 101 wins.

The Devils are now 7-0-3 in the streak that started Feb. 23 and have moved from eighth place in the Eastern Conference to fifth, a point ahead of Tampa Bay and two behind fourth-place Philadelphia.

Petr Sykora had a goal and two assists, and Scott Niedermayer, Bobby Holik and Bill Guerin also scored as the Devils played very much like the team that breezed through the playoffs last season in winning the Stanley Cup.

The performance against Tampa Bay was especially impressive since the Lightning was 10-1-1 in their last 12 games and goalie Daren Puppa was riding a nine-game unbeaten streak (7-0-2).

Lemaire is now 101-68-31 in two-plus seasons as the Devils coach. Before his arrival, Doug Carpenter had the most coaching wins, going 100-166-24 between 1984 and Jan. 26, 1988.

Flames 3, Sabres 1: German Titov scored one goal and set up another to help visiting Calgary to its fifth victory in six games.

Titov's power-play goal at 14:40 of the second period gave Calgary a 2-1 lead and stood up as the game winner. Gary Roberts scored into an empty net with 37 seconds remaining to put the game away.

Titov scored his 25th goal just eight seconds after Buffalo forward Mike Peca was called for elbowing. Steve Chiasson started the play when he took a slap shot from the point off a faceoff, and Titov grabbed the rebound in front of Dominik Hasek and backhanded the puck into an open net.

Theoren Fleury also scored, and Rick Tabaracci made 32 saves and preserved the victory with a sliding save on Derek Plante with less than a minute remaining. …
