Has nothing changed in the last two months for Rudy Galindo?

It certainly seemed that way Sunday when Galindo, in a performance technically as strong as the one that lifted him to a stunning national championship, won his qualifying group at the World Figure Skating Championships.

Actually, life has changed radically for Galindo, who for nearly a decade skated on the fringes of the top level of the sport. His success at the U.S. nationals in his hometown of San Jose, Calif., made him a man in much demand and secured his future financially.

"After San Jose, it was a whirlwind," Galindo said. "But now I'm in the same group as everybody else. I think I belong in that group."

He did Sunday. His skating was brilliant once more as he wowed the crowd with eight triple jumps, six in combination, in his program to "Swan Lake." His marks ranged from 5.6 to 5.9 as he easily beat countryman Dan Hollander, who was second among the 11 skaters in their group to advance to Wednesday's short program. …
