Lincoln Rallies Past Highland 54-53

Pressure. That's what East St. Louis Lincoln applied and that's what Highland couldn't handle.

The Tigers used an 8-0 run and played a trapping, pressure defense as they rallied to beat the host Bulldogs 54-53 in the fifth annual Highland Optimist tripleheader Shootout on Saturday night.

Breese Mater Dei rallied for a 53-51 victory over Effingham in the opener. Cardinal Ritter played Centralia in a late game.

Lincoln trailed 53-46 with 5 minutes 1 second left, but Kimon Green started the 8-0 run with a short jumper with 4:24 to go.

Craig Brown ended the run with the game-winner - a 12-foot jump shot from the left side with seven seconds left.

The win raised Lincoln's record to 5-6, while Highland, ranked No. 8 in the Post-Dispatch small schools poll, fell to 11-2.

"We saw they couldn't handle the pressure that well in the first half, so we decided to keep it up late in the game," said Lincoln coach Bennie Lewis. "If you play defense hard and have the desire to win, you can pull these games out. …
