Lady Pioneers Fall to State Champ Cor Jesu

Article excerpt

The Cor Jesu Academy Chargers were undefeated Class 4A state champions a year ago. This season, they're 13-2 and ranked second behind Parkway South in the Post-Dispatch large-schools poll.

The Chargers came to St. Charles Monday to take on Duchesne, the area's seventh-ranked small school.

Cor Jesu won 61-42, dropping Duchesne to 11-3 on the season.

The Chargers led 12-6 after one quarter and 36-19 by halftime; their leading scorer was Niele' Ivey, who tossed in a game-high 30 points. Teammates Olivia Reichert (13 points, six assists) and Nicole Wall (12 points) also had big games for Cor Jesu.

Julie Pryor scored 12 points for Duchesne; no other Lady Pioneer scored more than five points.

Duchesne, which had won 11 consecutive games after a season-opening loss to St. Charles West, has now dropped two straight. The Lady Pioneers are in the midst of a grueling stretch in their schedule; they play host to St. Charles (No. 15, small schools) tonight, to defending Class 3A Incarnate Word Academy (No. 3, small schools) Friday and to Borgia (No. 6, small schools) Monday.

In the Elsberry Tournament Monday, top-seeded Warrenton (6-4) eased by eighth-seeded Fort Zumwalt North 62-30.

Warrenton is ranked 15th in the latest Post-Dispatch large-schools poll.

Zumwalt North (1-11) will meet the Elsberry/Winfield loser in the consolation semifinals today at 6:30 p.m.

Defending champion St. Dominic, the tournament's No. 3 seed, will play sixth-seeded Silex in a first-round game today at 5 p.m. St. Dominic (7-5) is ranked 17th among area small schools.

In another first-round game Monday, second-seeded Clopton beat seventh-seeded Wright City 71-19.

The eight-team event wraps up Saturday.

In a key girls game tonight, Duchesne is scheduled to play host to St. Charles. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

St. Charles, 10-5 overall, leads the tightly bunched Gateway Athletic Conference at 2-0 while Duchesne is 11-3 and 2-2. …
