Soon, you may not have to drive at all to renew your drivers license.

That convenience could be provided through the Internet by the state of Illinois, which booted up a computer service Monday letting people tap into a lode of state stuff.

Christened the Illinois Gateway, the hookup is a "home page" on the World Wide Web, the global computer network.

Home pages work like the screens on cash machines, offering information and choices that users can select to bring up different screens. While a c ash machine asks you if you want your checking account balance and then gives it to you, Illinois Gateway asks you if you want to request applications for new license plates.

Right now, all you can do is order the application material through the Internet. Eventually, Secretary of State George Ryan wants drivers to be able to buy license plate renewal stickers and renew drivers licenses through the Gateway page. Pending legislation would allow that, though current law doesn't, he said.

"Anyone with access to the Internet - through a computer at home, at a library or at the office - now has a new means of conducting business with my office," Ryan said. …
