Article excerpt

Indiana beat the flu, and then took care of Penn State.

Brian Evans scored 32 points as the Hoosiers overcame a flu bug that struck half the team early this week and beat the ninth-ranked Nittany Lions 72-54 Wednesday night in Bloomington, Ind.

The loss dropped Penn State (18-3, 9-3 Big Ten) a half-game behind first-place Purdue in the conference race. Indiana (15-9, 8-4) remained in third place.

Five Indiana players were hit by the flu after the team's return from Iowa on Sunday. Andrae Patterson spent one night in the hospital, and a workout was canceled Tuesday when four other Hoosiers were too ill to practice.

Indiana led only 54-50 with about seven minutes to go before Evans, one of the Hoosiers who managed to escape the bug, started an 18-4 streak with two baskets. Penn State got only one free throw by Matt Gaudio and a 3-pointer by Glenn Sekunda the rest of the game.

The Nittany Lions, who came in as the nation's most accurate 3-point shooting team at 45.3 percent, missed their first nine 3-point attempts in the second half before Sekunda's basket. They finished five for 22 for the game.

Sekunda led Penn State with 18 points, while Gaudio added 10.

Minnesota 64, Michigan State 63: John Thomas hit a short jump shot with 1:23 left in the second overtime to put visiting Minnesota ahead to stay as the Gophers (13-10, 5-6) defeated Michigan State (13-11, 7-5).

Minnesota freshman Courtney James scored six points of his season-high 18 points in first overtime. James also had 12 rebounds before fouling out in the second extra period. John Thomas and Charles Thomas each had 13 points for the Gophers.

Quinton Brooks led the Spartans with 18 points and Ray Weathers added 13. Jamie Feick had 15 rebounds.

After John Thomas' basket gave Minnesota a 64-62 lead, Brooks hit the first of two free throws for Michigan State to cut the lead to one point with 1:08 left. …
