A new survey confirms what many St. Louisans have long suspected: Companies here are stingy about salaries.

St. Louisans get paid about 2 percent less than the national average for comparable jobs - significantly less than people on either coast, in Chicago or even in Peoria.

The survey was conducted by William M. Mercer Inc., a nationwide consulting firm with offices in St. Louis and many other cities.

Mercer looked at pay levels for more than 90 jobs at 3,000 companies in 200 cities. The survey looked at job titles ranging from accountants to word processors. But Mercer did not try to correlate pay for accountants here with pay for accountants in other areas.

According to the survey, St. Louisans earn $48,965 for jobs that pay an average of $50,000 a year nationwide, or 2.1 percent less than average.

Pay variances are smaller at lower and higher salary levels. Jobs that pay $80,000 on average pay $78,968 in St. Louis, or 1.3 percent less than average. …
